Spice King of Zanzibar

Trading in cloves, cardamom, and social capital.

SPICE KINGDOM

A kingdom is just a guest list with better branding.

This one has no borders, no army, and no discernible economy. Membership is hereditary, in the sense that someone already in it has to bring you. The qualifications are kindness, open-mindedness, and a functioning sense of the absurd.

Exhibit A: Sergey Brin at my Halloween party
Exhibit B: someone's DJ set at my house went ninety minutes past what the neighbors had agreed to. That's Steve Huffman.

THE COURT

Good events. With good people.

01/ Jungle Juxtaposition - Cardamom - Scoville 8,000

200 people, one rainforest, zero cell service. Global Influencer NAS DAILY somewhere in the foliage.

02/ Silicon Valley Ladies' Soirée - Saffron - Scoville 0

The most expensive spice in the world and not remotely hot. Classy though. Michelle Phan attended.

03/ Ice Age - Peppercorn - Scoville 100

A heat rating this low was a deliberate provocation. Justin Kan was there and he knows what he did.

ABOUT SPICE KING

I price risk for a living. Probabilistic markets, asymmetric bets, the occasional catastrophic misread of a situation.

Parties are the same job with better lighting. You're guessing who should meet whom, what happens at 1am, whether 400 people fit in a house. Most of the guesses are wrong. The ones that land are worth all the ones that don't.

Lately: poker, mostly. And a few things I'm not ready to talk about.

To the right: The one time I tried to launch a gaming console.
